Paediatric ENT
Ear
Healthy ears are critical to speech and language development. Middle ear infections and fluid can be difficult to detect. Patience and a gentle technique are key to successfully examining a young child. Older children can be engaged by showing real-time images of the ear drum obtained with a miniature camera.
Throat
Snoring. Light, occasional snoring is normal in children. However, heavy snoring that occurs every night can be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea (complete collapse of the throat during sleep that causes a drop in body oxygen levels).
Recurrent Tonsillitis. Recurrent tonsillitis is usually due to infection with a particular bacteria (Streptococcus), that can persist despite treatment with antibiotics because it can lay dormant within recesses in the tonsil.
Tonsillectomy is a safe and effective procedure for the treatment of these conditions. Throat discomfort following surgery is minimised with the latest surgical techniques.
Nose
Blocked Nose. Nasal obstruction and mouth breathing in children may be caused by enlarged adenoids (accessory tonsil tissue at the back of the nose) or enlarged turbinates (from hay fever/allergic rhinitis).
Adenoidectomy and Turbinoplasty are simple procedures that can be performed as a day case and require minimal time off school or kinder.
Paediatric Head & Neck
Neck lumps. Neck lumps in children can be from a variety of causes. Common problems encountered include enlarged lymph glands (lymph nodes), abscesses, branchial cleft cysts and thyroglossal duct cysts.
